step solutions

so my new camper came with the accordion style steps (not glowsteps). they are a little to short as my truck is taller, but even if I prop them up they never seam to sit all the same (flat) so I am looking for a different step system that will be, how do I say it, not as sketchy.

Glowsteps look like the same design with double cross bars instead of single and glowing steps, but are they rock solid when deployed? and is the price worth it?

my other option is to get one of those receiver hitch cargo carries and build something that will deploy from that, maybe even a ramp design to make it easier on the dog?

what have people done to solve step issues?

Steve
  • some one asked I am 39" where the stairs mount, its an older (1991 10 foot slumber queen) so no bumper on it.

the main issue I have is the styairs when deployed are different angles, so the first couple wont be parralel to the groun where the bottom couple will.

Don't fool around and waste time. Get the Glow steps. If you want more stability get a railing. It was shocking how much better they are!

I have an extra glow step still in my garage if you were closer. My camper only needed 4 but got five as it was cheaper.
  • I did not want to use a five stepper to get in my camper. Seems too many chances to have an accident.

I bought these from etrailer and got the sticky strips from Lowe's. Only had to cut the width, the depth of them fit perfect and they are very non-skid.

  • You didn't say how high above the ground your camper door was.

Take a look at MORrydes Quick Connect Step. It comes in 2, 3, and 4 step versions.

The 2 step version covers 21 to 27 inches, the 3 step covers 27 to 36 inches and the 4 step covers 36 to 44 inches.

    MORryde Entry Steps

BTW, the Glow Steps are rated to handle up to 300 lbs. The MORrydes 500 lbs.
  • The landing gear feet make a huge difference compared to the standard bracket that comes with the TL Glowsteps. The steps somehow feel much more solid and stable with them.
  • I found the above sets inconvenient if not danger.
We had several good topics about nice sets, but they don't show in searches anymore.
Here is my final design where glow step makes nice landing leveled with bumper step and
HERE is topic how we brainstormed different designs.

Bedlam has different idea about starting glow step above the bumper, what avoids single step over basement much higher than the rest. Than basement is no longer easy accessible.
I am thinking about adding step above the bumper to my setup. That would require additional support, like block of wood between bumper step and additional glow step.
That idea is on hold as additional step cost almost $100 and I have other project on my driveway.
  • Yah, use the GlowSteps and luv'em. you can ADD steps, up to six I believe and they are adjustable to the ground. Compacts easily and is critical for WalMart (Markets) stops...

They are easy to take off too.
make sure you get the Locks with it, they are stronger and keeps them from wandering off.

    Alignment:
I put mine offset a little to allow for opening the door while on them instead of right in front of it, so plan accordingly if you can.

I string a set of lights for night time ease of seeing them which helps..

Can't really think of any negatives, but each camper is different.. so keep that in mind...
    Otherwise, strongly recommend them...
    Good luck...

  • Our first camper (Lance 165) had the accordion steps and for us (older) it was an accident waiting to happen. I changed those steps out for a receiver hitch carrier and made a step out of that, it worked, but just ok. I don't know why but it seems like we go in and out about a zillion times a day. Our new to us camper Lance 1130 came with the bumper/step and that is soooooo much better than any of the make shift attempts for a safe step. My suggestion is to get one of the new torqlift bumpers with step or what ever the OEM step would be appropriate
