I wasn't in the market for DRW as I was only towing a 6,000# bumper tow at the time. I found a good deal on a low mileage DRW 3500 and jumped on it. I love driving the truck and the best part is it is all mine as the wife won't drive it. I like the way it tows my 5er and have no regrets. A few trivial observations:
- I live in suburbia with big empty parking lots so parking is never a problem. I would never take it into the city as parking would be next to impossible.
- Backing my boat is an issue as the fenders block my sight line for the trailer. I have to look over my shoulder instead of using the mirrors.
- The truck came with new tires but someday the cost of 6 new ones may hurt a little.
- Reaching into the bed to deal with my 5er hitch has required a stool due to the extra fender width.
- I have plastic hub caps which are not the greatest. I would like to have some nicer wheels but have yet to see any on a dually that I liked.
- Checking and changing air pressure is a little more work.
- Cost of rotating tires is higher as the tire shop has to dismount and remount two of them due to sidewall lettering.
I've been driving a dually for 3 years now as a fulltimer and I pretty much agree with what you say, but I do have a couple comments:
1. Buying 6 tires at once - The front tires on mine wore faster then the rears, so I bought 2 and then bought 4 about a year later.
2. I only rotate the fronts, which I leave on the same axle. The rears all wear the same, both left and right sides and outers as well as inners. They are on a solid axle, so it makes sense. When I get an alignment, they only do the fronts - nothing to adjust on the rear end.
If I was to change my mind and rotate the rears, I would only rotate the outers, side to side and they would stay on the rear axle. So far, I see no reason to start doing this.
3. Extended valve stems (or extensions) will make checking air pressure much easier, as will using a good gauge (check out the Milton S976 or S986 on Amazon).
