Thank you all for your expressions of support and interest. I went down to the tow yard yesterday to look at the damage. The truck damage was actually pretty limited, the camper however, is another story. I have pictures, but not in a frame of mind to post them today.
It is my believe that the object of the theft was the truck itself. The camper came along for the ride. When they found that a chop shop could not handle it with the camper on and/or they wanted to drive it to the mexico where most of the stolen pickups are destined, with the camper on it would be too obvious to the state patrol or other police agencies.
You ask why couldn't they take it off? Here is where complements to TorkLift and their Fastguns and Fastgun Locks. There were signs that they attempted to break the locks or sever the steel shafts on the Fastguns and the locks, but were unable to do that. Had they been able to simply put a chain around the front and attach it to a tree, simply driving the diesel truck forward would result in the camper crashing to the ground. Can you just see the damage?
As it was they managed to get the generator, propane tanks, TV, control panel with DVD/stereo player, seat cushions and all our paper plates and toilet paper among numerous other little items. They attemped to remove the refrigerator, but were unable because they could not get the slideout extended.
Now I am sure there will be a hassle witht he insurance company as I doubt they have had to deal with a camper repair very often. Wish me luck.
