If you can't get that rig in and out of most modern gas stations you'll have trouble getting in and out of most campgrounds. I'm about 44' and pull into just about any station I feel like. Just use a little sense when positioning.
Keep in mind that just about every station in the country has their gas delivered by an 18 wheeler. The underground tanks are usually buried right there in the pavement around the pumps. If an 18 wheeler can get in and out you should be able too.
I agree this it true. While I do try to use stations where there's more room, I don't worry about it much anymore in general. Like most of us, the OP will probably get good at it and won't think about it much after a while either. In the mean time, just remember the world doesn't stop because you pump gas and take up some extra room. When pulling into pumps, try and swing wide planning for your exit before hand. Envision your path before you commit the rig if you can, otherwise, simply back up. If there's someone behind you, walk back and tell them what's about to happen. Been there, done that. I like to watch their faces when the back up lights come on. Remember when pulling away from and island or curb not to straighten out the rig as soon as the truck clears. You need to maintain the arc of the rig until the trailer axles clear, then straighten up. Swing wide, maintain your turning arc and take your time. There are worse fates in this world than holding people up. Sometime you just gotta do what you gotta do.
