Fuel stops

Is there an app, GPS or book that lists all of the fuel stops that will accommodate larger units. I don't like travelling down the road wondering where the next stop may be that is large enough to accommodate my rig.

  • Thanks everyone. My rig is a 35' gas job. I never thought about using google earth, I will give it a try.

Besides the mentioned apps and those of which my co pilot has in her phone, I have a little book that I bought at a truck stop years ago. It lists all the interstates and a bit more, the truck stop their size and what they have for amenities, as well.
  • Go to POI factory on internet and you will have numerous fuel POI files sorted any way you desire. Also has numerous other types of POI files.

I don't know what your rig is, but my DP has a 100 gallon tank which gives me about 700 miles before I really have to find fuel. So when I've done cross country travel once I've done about 500 miles I start looking and I make sure to look in rural areas versus while transiting a metro area. For example if I was heading South on I-5 getting ready to go through Los Angeles and I knew I didn't have enough fuel to get all the way through, I'd be stopping outside of Bakersfield at one of the truck stops and filling up.
  • Unfortunately If you need GASOLINE, even truck stops sometimes don't have good maneuvering room. I just drove r/t from MD to Key West last week. Stopped only at PILOT/FLYING-J's. Two of them were VERY tight with a 36' Class A. It was almost impossible at one while I had a boat behind me on the way down.

Cant they just add a gasoline dispenser or two in the TRUCK LANE area? Im usually taking 50-60 gallons at a time and take up a fair bit of space.

    ok...rant over ;)
  • I use the Gas Buddy & Flying J apps frequently. However we still have a "Next Exit" printed book that comes out on almost every trip. In the event of any smart phone failure it is nice to have a printed version to fall back on. We also use it to scope out rest areas.
  • There is also a book-I think it is still in print-Next Exit the problem with the book is you have to stop or have a co-pilot get it out and read it. I have had one for years and generally do not use it.

Mostly I use Gas Buddy to plan where I will find low cost fuel and Google Maps to zoom down to the street level to look at the stations access. Google also lets me see food places around the planned fuel stop. You can find RV parks, stores, and just about any service you need on Google Maps.

I have also found Google to be pretty accurate about driving time, and I just need to add my estimate of how long we will spend eating, fueling, etc. to figure when we will arrive somewhere.
  • I have been using the TruckerPath app for a long time.

Gives rest stops, trucks stops, food, fuel, Walmarts, etc, plus all the pertinent info. It's a free, amazing app.
  • Our Garmin RV760 GPS has a category for truck stops. All I have to do (using the voice commands) tell it to find a category along the route and tell it "truck stops." They pop up from the nearest to the farthest down the road and the list shows me brands miles to each. We pull with a diesel truck and need 13'4" overhead clearance, so the truck lanes at the truck stops are my "go to" fuel points.

  • We use gasbuddy to locate the best gas prices. We are 36' pulling a trailer , gas engine and can get into most gas stations. You can also use googlemaps satelite and streetview to actually look at the gas station for pump layout and space. You can also go to any of the truckstops. To find them, use allstays.com
