More often than not, my exit route involves backing up. Even at the Pilots and Love's where there is plenty of real estate, the pump islands are perpendicular to the store, and there's just not enough room to pull through. I try for the outside island and just back out when I'm done fueling.
I usually try to pick interstate exits where I can see signs for multiple brands, then when I exit I look for the station with the best layout. Truck stops aren't much good when you need unleaded and not diesel, LOL.
Sometimes you start looking at 3/8 of a tank and it just happens that you are on a loooong stretch with no fuel stations at the exits. When you finally see an exit with a gas station, you're at 1/4 tank, so you just exit and deal with what's there. When I'm at 1/4 I never pass up a gas station, I don't care what it looks like.
I've had to back out of stations and onto 4 lane roads, but it is what it is...better than running out of gas! I put on the 4-ways, the 55W driving lights I have for backup lights on the TT come on, and I just ease out slowly. Just remember that the folks blowing the horn and flipping you off as you back out are NOT that same folks that would come to help you if you run out of gas....
