Stove vent

This is an interesting and unique modification found on the Northwood RV Owners Association website using magnets to hold the vent door closed until the exhaust fan is turned on.

I think this could be done without removing the vent housing from the RV wall exterior.

Interesting, I'll pass. Sounds like a year or two of refinement may be needed.

I feel the instructions are a bit too generic and lacking in detail. They are selling this for $200; they could spend a bit more time on the instructions and use a few more pieces of paper so the photos are not postage stamp size.

I retrofitted to a late model Heng brand hood with sloped front. I had to drill out several spot welds to remove the old fan unit. Not a big deal but it's disconcerting because you feel like one wrong move and you might mess something up. But really, all the spot weld points are more or less hidden when the range hood is in place. Don't be in a panic to cut the above-hood wiring as instructed before getting the hood down and sitting on the stove top (cover with a thick towel or cardboard). There probably will be enough slack in the wire that you can look things over and think about where to cut. You might be able to remove wire nuts and not have to cut at all.

FOP provided a tin box to cover the under-hood wiring, but it sure wouldn't work on my Heng hood. Neither did the OEM wiring cover once the SAM unit was in place. I would have to so some serious tin-smithing to make something work. So for now, and probably forever, I bundled the wiring up out of sight and touch with zip ties.

I wouldn't use the FOP exterior grille if you paid me. It doesn't have enough overhang to prevent entry by a driving rain. The foam gasket they use instead of butyl tape is something I think will eventually disintegrate like most foam gaskets do. So I am sticking with my original exterior vent outlet. At some point I'll modify the flapper with a screen so it doesn't have to be opened.

All that said, the product is a major improvement over the ancient low tech OEM fan and light. Quiet and powerful fan. Good LED light, and a night light too! Once I get the flapper modified, all of my expectations will be met."

I give the FOP replacement vents 5 stars and two thumbs up. They're really a (drumroll, please) fabulous product.

There is a nice one made for air streams reproductions. But it is pricy

As with most things these days... quality has “left the building” We’ve got two on our unit ( a 5th wheel), one for the clothes dryer the other for the stove vent. Can’t find anything “remotely” similar in original component quality. The same can be said for the bay doors and entrance door latches!

I was totally amazed at the low quality of these. Mine broke the second time I used it. The dealer replaced it for free. When the tech was replacing the flapper, he asked which design I would like. The first choice matched the previous flapper. It was hinged with two very thin diameter plastic pins. The other choice was a piece of duct tape or similar tape for the hinge. I gave up and rebuilt the old flapper with metal hinge pins. I very rarely use the vent. The fan is also low, low quality and extremely noisy.

We also use the fantastic fan when cooking, and never cook anything like bacon inside, I do that outside so all the neighbors can smell it.

My problem child vent was on the rear wall of our TT. Plastic pin hinges at top, and two plastic latch tabs at bottom, covered by a separate part - the hood. Can stand on the bumper, but often forgot to latch it.

One day, it became gone. Then we started getting back drafting and dust all over the range top.

Replaced (affordably) just the door flap. No more dust, no more packing (which we also used for awhile).

So a missing flap CAN be a problem.

For a side mount (TC), maybe no so big a deal. I like the awning hook or dowel idea expressed by some.
