Stupid question from a total newbie

Hi, we just purchased a kodiak express 186e and are leaving for our first outing this week. We will be staying at a place with electric hookup. Will I be able to plug in and use regular appliances such as a hairdryer and coffee maker or do they have to be special ones made for a tt? Thanks for your patience. I'm sure I will have lots more dumb questions to ask this week

Every thing should work as it does in your house.

Your Kodiak Express is a 30A service. As others have said normal household appliances are what you want to use.

The catch is the 30A. You need to be aware that you have limits to how many things can be operated at the same time before you trip the 30A breaker.

    A/C will use 15A
    electric water heater is ~12A
coffee maker can be between 6A and 10A
hair dryer is between 12A and 15A
    toaster is ~10A
    microwave is ~8A

As you can see if the A/C is running (15A), you just got out of the shower and the water heater is on (12A) and you turn on the hair dryer (12A) the breaker will trip. In this scenario we turn off the water heater.

I know you asked "can you" and the answer is Yes, absolutely. But you need to be aware of the limitations of the provided power.

Listen to 2112 above. He knows what he is talking about. Read and learn.

  • All of your regular appliances will work as long as you do not exceed the power rating of your coach's input service. In other words, if you have a 30 amp input and you already have the AC unit running, you can probably not use anything more than 1200-1500 watts, TOTAL. Basically your AC and microwave will max out a 30 amp service so if you want to use the coffee maker or hair dryer, you have to turn off the microwave.
If you have 50 amp input service, you have a lot more flexibility and can use more items.
  • Yes to normal appliances, but.

You have to know where you've plugged in. If it's 30 amp, you can run pretty much everything in the trailer. If it's 20 amp, running the coffee pot, the air conditioner and sparking up the hairdryer may pop the main breaker.
  • Nope. Use what you have. If you have 50amp on your RV no worries. If 30 amp then you might not be able to use your hair drier and microwave at the same time, or air conditioner. You'll most likey trip a breaker.
