Question doesn't customs at the border check the tag against driver information?
Nope, they don't check anything. We have been driving into a Mexico border town for dental work numerous times this last year. Sometimes the Mexican border guys ask us a question or two, sometimes just wave us in. They never check anything about the vehicle, and never ask us for our passports, or any other ID. However, we need our passports to get back through US Customs.
It would be easy peasey to take a stolen vehicle into Mexico, even for an American.
