^ Ram needs to get that 8 speed going.....at least their 6 speeds are decent unilke the 2nd and 3rd gen truck’s 47-48res. But why they always gotta be the last to have a good trans? They were the leaders with the 8HPs a few years ago and now s ucking hind teat again in the trans dept.
The Ram 8 speed is a ZF. Existing transmissions can handle big HP (Demon) but not the huge low RPM torque today's diesels are putting out. They will have to come up with something if Ford and GM both go with more gears.
I would think it's more the weight they are expected to handle, not the low end torque. Put 35K behind a Demon (with no tongue weight, like those "tow the space shuttle" PR stunts), put it to the floor, and the trans might not be so happy anymore.
Or maybe it would be fine. They are only putting the ZF8HP75 in the gas HD trucks from what I read, and its not even the stoutest version. They make ZF8HP90's and 95's that are even stronger for the Trackhawks and Hellcats.
It has everything to do with SAE repeated hill starts in forward and reverse.
The AISIN IS A True MD trans not sure of its weight but I’m sure it’s no lightweight.
Well just looked it up:
Aisin 400#
68RFE 263#
So paid a 173# premium in lost payload for a great transmission, not a bad trade off. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

With the horsepower and torque bands bridging the steps in the 6 speed quite well, I see little need for more gears. I guess there is some minuscule advantage, but I don't think that I would care for the additional shifting.
What will be the weight cost for the 10 speed? How much heavier is it than the current 6 speed.

Thought I read/heard something like 4 lbs more. - wilber1Explorer

Not enough changing to entice me into buying a new Ford..... maybe a new GM, but, more than likely I'll keep what I have for a few more years.
YEA but you keep coming back to those "SEXY HIPS". :B
Your right. By the time I'm ready to buy something new, Ram might have some sexy power ears to go with those sexy hips and I'll be going all the way over to the dark side. - LynnmorExplorerWith the horsepower and torque bands bridging the steps in the 6 speed quite well, I see little need for more gears. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIII tow more weight than most on here 33-35k combined. I have never wished I had an inbetween gear.
Now on my 98 and now 01 Sport I sure wish there was a gear between 3rd and 4th!
We will see in upcoming real world tests. - Mickeyfan0805Explorer

I believe this is the F-450.
The video says it starts with the F-250 and runs through the MDT platform.
