Hi,Looking at a Surge Guard (TRC brand) for our TT. I need a 30A model... What I need to figure out is:1) Is it noisy (any high pitch sounds, etc.) to install under dinette seat area?2) Does it work well with a generator (I use a Champion 3000/4000W generator). It is not an inverter model but does seem to put out stable power. Has run our A/C, fridge etc for 2 years now. 3) Better to get portable for the easy of removal (if needed)? or permanent installed model for easy of securing it from thieves?Any other suggestions or comments?Thanks in advance.

Just purchased a new 5er and this time I will go with the proable uint. It's been through torrential rain, torrential snow, sub-zero temperatures, and high heat (in September), and still works perfectly fine. I then plug in the protector. I then run the trailer cord to the wheel well and plug it into the protector.First, someone passing by will not see the protector hanging from the electric campground pedestal because it's not there.Second, you really have to make an effort to see it under the wheel well. And if someone attempts to steel it, they have to be pretty bold to climb around under and around the camper to wedge it out from on top of the wheel.Now that you know, here's a blow-up of the same photo. Although not 100% theft proof, it's portability is perfect for us.

I had a Surge Guard on my TT. It made a minor humming sound. So minor, one could not hear it inside. And, one had to really listen with ears 12" away from the unit to hear its natural humming sound. As a general statement, it was silent to many ears. Installing Surge Guard on soft felt pad eliminated its vibration sound.

Progressive Industries has Lifetime warranty on ALL their surge guard/protectors.

The 'other' brand....1 yr.

No brainer on which Brand.

Portable or Hardwired.

IF you have easy access/space....Hardwired after shore power/generator power

If access/space difficult....Portable.
Our Portable has been hung on 100's and 100's of CG pedestals all across USA.

Just bought a TT and have read multiple horror stories on the different forums. Do I really need to get a SP? How many CG have problems with the shore power they supply?

All answers so far seem to skip over that and I hope it is not forgotten. My expectation is that it would probably trip if installed between a generator and the RV but I have no experience on this since I don't have a generator (yet).

On the other questions - my experience is similar to others' in that it makes no appreciable noise and portability is great for some but if one will be keeping the RV for a long time the hardwired options offers more security. All a question of convenience.

Are you willing to be a test case? ;)

The way I look at this is it is better to spend the couple hundred bucks to protect the whole RV from the problems described here.

In all the time I had one (2 RVs one Surge Guard) it tripped only once in 4 years and counting. The cost/year is dropping while I am still protected. :)
