Sway Bar Attachment Issue

Hi All,
Just curious if anyone else has had similar experiences... we just bought an F150 and had the ball, etc... adjusted for the new truck. Since then, every time I try and attach the bars, one side goes on very easy while the other is a complete struggle, even after I raise the tongue to its max. I have the e2 system with the friction control for sway. The bars are rated for 1k pounds.

  • My Reese HP trunnion style and now my current Equalizer 4 point are the same way. As stated above, I think it's the slight twist of the shank in the receiver when I attach the left bar and then the right. Never gave it any concern. All is well with the tongue jack up and it tows like a champ.
  • I have this problem also on the left side of mine. My problem is the left side of my truck is a little higher because of my drive way and the way I have my trailer parked. This last camping trip we had a spot with an incline in the front. We wanted the door of the trailer positioned right on the spot which then put the front of my truck higher. I had to back up, unhook my bars, then pull forward to where we wanted the trailer parked. It was a headache sorta..I like the level spots where very little has to be done. Did you get your problem straightened out or find a solution?

I have a friend that had this problem. I took a look at it and found the problem. His hitch was really loose in the receiver. After hooking one side the hitch would turn/twist and it dropped the other side down making it harder to connect. I built him a extra heavy hitch vice so the hitch would not twist in the receiver and it really helped.

A way to verify this is to hook up opposite sides first.
Hook up the passenger side first. Is the driver side tight?
Then hook up the driver side first. Is the passenger side tight?
If the answer is yes to both, then the twist is likely correct.
If the answer is only yes to one, then it is likely something else - ground slightly uneven, trailer heavy on one side, etc.
    Make sense?

EDIT: Try putting the 4X4 under the jack to get more height. That should work.
  • Same problem, even with different trucks/different trailer, different WDH. Always seems that one side is tighter.

Makes sense what JnJn said about the twist causing it.
  • Mine seems to do that as well. I just jack it a little higher, and hook it.
  • i have the same hitch. if the shank is already at the right height, the brackets on the A-frame may need to be adjusted as well. you could also use a 6x6 chunk of wood under the tongue jack to get that max height a little higher if needed.
  • I have not had that experience, how does your trailer sit once everything is hooked up, is it completely level? It sounds to me like you might be nose up slightly which would mean dropping down one set of holes in the shank and re-adjusting the geometry.
