Tail gate

What kind of camper do you have Beeman? As you can see , being specific might help cut to the chase!

Depending on the camper that little support might be good. Probably not, and you'll save 50lbs or so. I had a similar set up but kept the gate on, didn't make that much difference in weight. Will 50lbs really make that big of a difference?? Is your camper sitting on the bed or do you have to shim it up?? If you are shimming then it depends more on how much the gate is supporting the shim. If the shim ends at the end of the bed then obviously the gate is supporting nothing. I read people worry about the strength of the gate but those cables that hold them up are rated to 1000 lbs each so I doubt that's a valid concern.

Looking to cut the wgt of truck. Can I take tail gate off and still be ok with camper. Bed is 6'6" camper is 90". GMC half ton.

Unless you are using some "new math" 90" equates to 7'6" on a 6'6" bed.

So i take it that there is no need for it even if the camper hangs out 10-12"?

Beeman, most people are trying to figure out how to keep the gate! Take it off! My last truck camper combo was an 8 foot camper and a 91 f250 lariat. The tailgate had been passed from owner to owner as apparently I was the only owner to remove camper to use truck bed. When I sold truck that tailgate looked new compared to the 22 year old paint on the truck.

Depends on style of camper, and age, but most campers are designed for tailgate removal. I remove mine ,but its an 8' camper on an 8' box.

That's what we do
