Tail Waging

I have a 34 ft travel trailer. With a turn of the steering wheel at highway speeds the tail end wags back and forth. Will a tilt of the ball correct this or why does the ball have different positions? I am using the duel cam system which is supposed to stop this. Will tightening the chains help?
  • Rookie has the right idea. Get weights. There are instructions on here of the method to determine what you have. Be warned, it takes three separate weighing's. Once you get the information, you can make adjustments as necessary. Then you can begin to fine tune your setup. Cranking around on your hitch without knowing what you are towing is just making wild guesses. Something we are prone to do on the Internet.
  • I don't want to come off as a know-it-all because I admit that I haven't towed something that long in quite a while, but I personally would make sure my trailer has the right percentage of hitch weight for the trailer weight. I'm not discounting the fact that the Dual Cam might be part of the problem, but in my opinion simple lane changes should not start the trailer wagging, even without sway control of some kind. To me sway control is for high winds, emergency maneuvers, etc.
  • Maybe post a couple of pictures from different angles with it all hitched up.

Many of us have tinkered with our dual cam set ups over the years and have had great luck with the over all system.
  • Is this DC new to you? Your profile lists you as joining in 2010. , If this is new to you, what did you have before?
If it was a standard friction control, then you really need to study up on the DC. The big advantage of the friction control is that they can be set up poorly and still provide some benefit.

Not so with the DC. being as the sway control is integreated into the WD, a poorly setup DC loses both functions.

As Barney said, the DC needs to be dialed in pretty much spot on.
I consider it one of the more advanced hitches best suited for those that like to get involved in the setup of their rig. The sticky will help you out a lot.
If you run into trouble there are those here that sort of specialize in that hitch and I am sure you can get some one on one help.

  • The ball tilt is used to pre-tension the WD bars or to adjust the number of chain links used to get a certain amount of WD bar tension.

The Dual Cam system depends on tension on the bars to do its job. If you do not have enough then sway can develop. We have a very good tutorial here that explains how to set up your WD hitch. The second half of it is dedicated pretty much on setting up the Dual Cam sway system,
The Dual Cam is pretty finicky about being set up correctly so I would suggest you take a good look at it.
    Good luck. :)
