Tailgate or no tailgat?

Hi peeps, I'm a bit of a noob to the truck camper thing. Just picked up a 2011 Travel Lite 800 and I have a 2010 f150 6.5 box. What I was wondering is do I remove the tailgate or leave it on for more support? :h

  • If your Travel Lite is not a short-bed camper you may have a different issue than using the tailgate. The center of gravity may be behind the rear axle and create handling problems. But Travel Lite will be your best source of information.
Edit: Is your Travel Lite the 800 SB Model? You should be ok on COG if it is. Travel Lite Website
  • My TC and many others hang 18 or more inches past the bed. No better source for an answer than from the factory if you have to be sure.
  • Take it off.... it will suffer road rash while traveling facing down. Keep your investment safe and beautiful - in the garage! ;)

Put it in the garage. Save the weight. Tail gates aren't really designed to support a lot of weight compared to the bed itself. The TC should be designed to support itself beyond the end of the bed as it's most common to not have the gate in. If you have a TC that fits inside the bed area and you can close the tailgate, I'd leave it on and close it in transit then use it as a deck when parked/camped.

I tried emailing Travel Lite but no answer yet. The camper is an 8 footer and my truck box is 6'6" so there'd be 18" hang over. I wonder if that's ok or hmmm?
