Yeah, I agree. But there are a lot of variables, so prices are hard to compare. Like what brand gears, did you bring your own, can the same carrier be used, open or LS? Regardless though, $1500 for both axles with gears is a good price.
You could tell us who the LA shop is. I've got a Wrangler that might be getting regeared this year.
I took mine to a shop owned by a friend of mine. He's known to be expensive but, he will only use top shelf parts, his work is always perfect and he fully warranties everything he touches. Since it was the differential I didn't want to think about it anymore.
