Taking the Plunge (Gear Swap)

After owning a F250 6.2/3.73 for 5 years and now owning another (dually) 6.2/3.73 truck I have decided to take the plunge and swap gears to 4.30.

With the F250 I have towed a 11750 GVWR 5th wheel, a Rockwood Mini Lite 2304S (5000lbs), and carried two Lance 830 truck campers.

I have driven with stock LT245/75R17 tires and 33" tall Vision 19.5's/LT245/70R19.5G tires.

Hopefully in a few weeks I will be able to provide real feedback pertaining to the differences between the two gear ratios, based on having experienced both.

Grodyman- are you running the 33" tires on the truck to be swapped?

No, I have a new 2016 F350 dually, but the tires are Lt245/70R17, diameter is about 31". I will never get taller tires for this truck. I was considering 4.56's but feel it may be too much gear for the stock tires. I still have my brand new Visions/Tires that I removed from the old truck.

I understand I'm talking about a different animal but I had a 1997 F150 with a 4.6/3.55. After towing a 6000lb TT for two years I replaced the 3.55 with a 3.73 and it made a world of difference. Acceleration and dealing with headwind was the most noticeable. It cost me $800 in 2000, money well spent.

Going from a 3.73 to 4.30 on your F250 will be a good move. The change in grunt will be noticeable. You will enjoy the change
  • Definitely keep us updated. It should be an excellent test. Same truck, engine, driver and load. The only difference is the gears.

I'm curious how much of a difference it will make when towing. Let us know if there is much of a change in MPG.

Just curious what is your main reason for changing the gears?

The Ford 6.2 with 3.73's is a fine combo, but I just want more grunt.
