I had an XP1k with an open trailer and currently have an ACE 900 with a longer, 6x12 open trailer.

I think it really depends upon what you're planning on doing with it.
If just local rides to staging areas, then Small open would be ideal.

If planning on traveling/Camping/riding around the states then I would get an enclosed one, mainly to haul extra gear and keep it secured.

Typically, locally, you're either in the truck or riding the buggy, so pretty much safe/secure. Overnighters/traveling or leaving at other locations might be a problem, but more like hauling additional stuff, gas, tools, tires etc and other toys which, heheh, will tend to fill up the empty spaces..

I'm full time and if I get another buggy, the trailer will be enclosed for the above reasons.

If I were pretty much stationary, then open. I've use the open trailer without any problems, I did get the Buggy covers which helps keep the roof on and dust/rocks from hitting it. A rock did hit the mirror and broke it so if an open trailer, I'd get the Cover too...

We love out Lance 1172 and the flexibility it offers while we are traveling. Now that I've moved to Yuma, AZ (and am using as a temporary living quarters until we can settle on a home, which is another great thing about the 1172 and its roominess) we are considering a RZR 4 XP1000. Plus in AZ I'll be able to register it for on road driving as well which will make those drives to and from work so much more fun!!!

Good advice, I did measure today and came up short. Our door is about 63" and need quite a bit more from what i have read. Guess now will look at 2up 4 wheeler. Polaris sportsman touring 850 SP did get my attention. Our enclosed trailer is set up just right for trike so need to keep it. Dang expensive thinking.

Pay attention to the trailer door height, many enclosed trailers aren't tall enough at the door to clear a SXS roof.

We've just bought a pair of 1978 Honda 90 trail bikes for camping. Now I need an enclosed trailer so we can haul around more stuff.

If you're comfortable with trailering it would be worth your while to do it.
The added mobility is great and opens up vast areas that the camping experience normally precludes.

We strongly considered an ATV. If trailering, why not carry "more stuff"? - so we considered an enclosed trailer. (I already had a car-hauler trailer).

The thought process eventually led to flat-towing a jeep 4-door.
We traded in the Acura for the Jeep - and the Jeep doubles as a daily driver.

And, we carry "more stuff" in the Jeep. Use it as a daily driver. Take the top off on nice days. It worked for us.

I've had quads and bikes all my life. Did the Jeep/crawler thing for a few years, had a bunch of sxs's and my last one was a RZR 1000xp4. Doing the boat thing now and building another Jeep. Do it, you won't regret the fun you will have. Kids and interest changes our hobbies but we always do SOMETHING!
