I guess I am the exception of this rule as an ex-owner of a BMW 335d(tuned and deleted inline 6 3.0L) that I put over 150k miles on before I sold it and a current owner of a 328d(also tuned and deleted inline 4 2.0L) that currently has over 60K.
The 335d never gave me engine trouble and never touched it besides maintenance. The only issues I had with the 335d were was with a few optional bells and whistles stuff that I could live without. So far, not issues with the 328d.
As far as maintenance, the oil is between $9-11 per quart depending if it is special and the filter for both is about $10. The 335d takes 8 quartz and the 328d takes 6 both at 10k mile intervals. The fuel filter is $45 that needs to be changes every fourth oil change. So far, that is is all I had to do with either diesel.
