well, they did run the duramax to the redline or very close to it. The duramax redline and rev limiter is 3200rpm. I couldn't tell for sure the peak rpm but is was at least 3000, near the HP peak for the duramax.
However, in tow/haul with the exhaust or grade brake the ecu cuts fuel and will let the engine rev to 5000. They had complaints about it going over the redline on the gauge when they had a 3200rpm redline, so the just removed the redline and solved the complaints.
course anyone who read the owners manual wouldn't have complained.
and it isn't the peak numbers that are most important, but the area under the torque curve in the rpm range used by the transmission that key to pulling power. and the test never showed any torque graph. that might paint an much different story.
