This came as a surprise

I have an enclosed utility trailer parked in front of my house in Minneapolis, because I'm moving, and it is a lot easier to park on pavement than in the back yard, especially in winter. And handier to load stuff. So today I went to pick up a newspaper, and when I got back, there was a parking ticket on the trailer tongue. It says that it's illegal to park a trailer on the street that is unattended and unattached to a tow vehicle.

Well, I would have thought that the vehicle license plate on the trailer would have allowed it to be parked on the street. Learn something new every day. Could have gone the rest of my life without learning this, and been just as happy. I'll soon be $42.00 poorer.

Word of caution to anybody else who might park a trailer on the street. It might be illegal.

  • Laws vary by city and state. In my part of Phoenix you can only park an RV in front of the house for 2 days at a time. It must be moved by day 3. Day 4 in theory could return for another 2 days. We usually have it parked out front for a day or 2 before a trip to allow for easy packing and cleaning.
  • In Huntington Beach, CA you can leave a unattached travel trailer parked on the street for 24 hours. My neighbor called on me is how I found out about the city rule. So how I just park it in front to the neighbor house. :)
  • TomG2, you're probably right about the reason for the law. It's just that this never, ever occurred to me that it might be a problem.

I really doubt that the neighbors had anything to do with this. One side is my son, other side is new folks renting who don't have a car to park anyway, and have their own house to park in front of if they did. I believe it was just a random cop with too much attention to detail.
  • Sadly I had the same thing happen when I parked my TT in the street along the side of my home and unhooked to get supplies for my planned camping trip. I apparently have a disgruntled neighbor who apparently turned me in because he didn't like RV's parked in the street.
A cop showed up at my door giving me a warning for not having a tow vehicle attached to my trailer. It was news to me be apparently not to my disgruntled neighbor.
  • Any chance on painting the house in 3" stripes of the rainbow or any bright colors before you move out? Give the neighbors something to remember you by because they called the parking police...
  • Sounds like the old "If everybody did it, think of the mess we would have" rule. You didn't mention how long it was parked there, or your relationship to your soon to be ex-neighbors. Might have something to do with it?
