Time for a new truck

Our GMC 2500 has seen too much ocean salt.

Ford or Chevy?
Diesel or gas?

We have a 2009 Lance 815 and plan on towing a Jeep Wrangler. I don't want a dually, they are difficult on the beach.

What are your thoughts?

Get the one that has the passenger compartment that fits you best. Back in 03 when I bought my truck I wanted a rig that me and my buddies could fit in to go on Fishing and riding trips. At the time only the Ford Crew Cab would fit 4 of us big guys in comfort. I tow heavy in the western Mountains of the US. That meant Diesel. 12 years later the truck still runs great (yes it is a 6.0).

Drive em all, sit in all the seats. can you sit there for hours or is it going to drive you nuts? How are the controls? can you see them at night? remember you are going to spend a ton of time behind the wheel going places. The cab better suit your style.
  • Boy, I can't believe I'm doing this, considering I'm a Chevy die hard, but ... here's something to think about. This guys enthusiasm tells the whole story! You might consider the same that he purchased. (May the Chevy gods forgive me!) Click here!

Based on my experience with 2 Ford 6.0 I wouldn't take a Ford if it was given to me.

I think if I had 1 6.0 that gave me trouble I'd not like Ford, but 2 of them??? WOW!!!I don't think I would buy Ford either.
Because of stories we've heard about the 6.0 and Fords handling of it, We avoided buying another Ford diesel. But since we were and are totally happy with our 2000 7.3 it wasn't much of a sacrifice.
We are lucky. Our truck doesn't play or live in salt, so rusting isn't what condemns them to an early death.
Our 2000 f350 runs and looks excellent.
We bought our new truck because I like what I have heard about the 6.7 and the changes to the engine and transmission for 2015 are great and the exhaust brake is terrific.
We are keeping the 2000 also it will continue do a lot of our hauling chores but the 6.7 will be carrying the camper.
This is the 1st new truck we have bought since 1986. We keep our trucks for 15 to 20 years I am coming up on 70 yrs, this should be my last truck. I got what I wanted except for a stick shift and that 6 speed auto is growing on me.
and wow all of those gadgets and gauges.
And not only does it talk to me but it listens also.

  • I would get a SRW 3500 brand of your choice. I would guess that you don't spend a lot of time in the big mountains out west, I would recommend a gas engine.
  • For hauling a TC on a SRW I'd get the gas engine. This will give you more available payload. Especially if you're towing the jeep on a trailer that will contribute tongue weight. If you're flat towing that wouldn't matter.
The added expense, DEF, maintenance, and fuel costs have made it very hard to justify a diesel anymore unless you're really towing or hauling heavy which you are not. I have an '05 Duramax and I had an '07. They were/are great trucks but if I were buying a new one for hauling my camper and towing my boat I think it would be a gas truck. Likely a RAM with the 6.4 Hemi.
Ford or Chevy? Wow. Really. Did you like your Chevy? Then get another one. If it didn't give you good service maybe you have reason to switch. My experience with many Chevy trucks has been excellent. Based on my experience with 2 Ford 6.0 I wouldn't take a Ford if it was given to me.
  • Check for the highest possible GVWR. I think that it is a Ford SRW at 11,500 pounds, but that is a guess.

You can also consider a 4X4 F-450 and then change the rear 4 tires to 'super single' tires. You are able to buy tires rated at 5,000 pounds each, and that will still allow you to have a 10,000 pound rear axle in addition to the 4,500+ on the front axle.

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • wow, You're going to get a lot of comments and then the wars will start. By my signature you can see what I like. What is your preference? did you like your last truck and the did you have any dealing with your dealer?
you've answered the question about dually.
Gas or diesel. Your'e last truck was 15 yrs old if you keep the next one that long and you like diesels ,go for it. And pick the brand you like, They are all good. Good luck and happy shopping.
