Whether you "NEED" a WD or not, is different than it will tow better with one.... It will.
I have a 1 ton dually Crewcab, (my second one). When I got this one and put my hitch on it, a test tow Showed that it felt unsettled compared to my previous truck. One more washer in the hitch head made it solid as a rock. I can imagine the difference between on WD whatsoever and a properly set up WD.
Having said that, some satisfied with less than perfect setups... Maybe they haven't towed with a great setup vs. their OK setups, so they just don't know what they are missing.
