I've read that you shouldn't use TPMS systems with sensors that screw on the valve stems if you have rubber valve stems as opposed to metal ones. Thoughts? I've been thinking of getting a system but I have rubber stems so am cautious.
The TST system can be used with either. I have rubber stems and use the TST system with no problems. I will say that I plan to have steel stems installed just to be on the safe side.
Just my .02 (based on recent experience)
I will never use a rubber stem again, period. Not after I got lucky. While prepping for a trip (fortunately well in advance) and packing bearings and checking tires and pressures, I discovered one tire was way down. Quick study found the valve stem rubber cracked and a small movement of the stem yielded air..... The others did not look much better. This was on a three year old trailer stored under cover 100% out of the sun. I have since read about inferior rubber being used in some of the stems but that is another story I will leave alone here.
I was near time for new tires so next thing I knew I was ordering new tires, and TST monitor..... Metal stems went in.
Just put tires on my truck and paid extra for the metal stems for the TPM upgrade. Way too much riding on that rubber and air.....
