A car trailer with a Jeep and a few motorcycles will be a few tons heavier than a 5500 boat. Boat trailers also typically have lighter tongue weight.
You can do it with a crazy extension and it will work.
It just isn't as good as keeping the hitch closer to the axle.
Driving tow trucks years ago illustrated that very clearly. With a wheel-lift rig, you can pull a lever and adjust the towed car closer in or further out. The difference is huge!
You always tow with the car pulled in as tight as clearance will allow... for good reason.
The physics here are the same. The further out you push the hitch, the worse the weight distribution, the worse the handling, the greater the stresses.
The only reason people use crazy extensions is because it's a ready-made bolt on solution.
