Don't buy "special lube" for hitches, just use same grease as you would for your axle bearings.
Don't need much, just a light coating will work fine.
I am a believer in using grease on a ball hitch, bought a new flat deck trailer a couple of years ago. The hitch was squeaking and grinding on the ball and that was without any additional load (2400 lbs unloaded). It took a couple of tows adding extra grease to the coupler to get rid of the squeak and grinding sound on the ball. Now it tows quietly.
That squeaking and grinding over time WILL wear down the ball AND coupler, enough wear and the ball will not fit as snug in the coupler as it should. But I can't really think folks would intentionally ignore the dry sound it makes...
