I have seen an unlubed 2-5/16" ball get chunks of steel ripped off of it at the same time the coupler was damaged. Galling of the metal is not uncommon on the heavy hitches. You may get by with a chrome ball and light weight trailer, but a heavy trailer will ruin the ball and the coupler without grease. If you add the tension of a WDH it gets even worse.
