That dealer doesn't know what he is talking about! He would be much better off keeping his mouth shut.:M
You should absolutely lube the ball. The pressure between the top of the ball and the inside of the coupler is tremendous when the WD bars are drawn up. This will not only cause premature wear on the components but will also tend to loosen the ball and eventually wear the hole in the hitch head - if the ball doesn't get pulled out before.:E
I used to, before purchasing my Hensley, wipe off the ball between towing sessions and re-apply regular wheel bearing grease before towing again. Also put some lube on the bar ends where they insert into the hitch head. You can use any kind of grease.
