Same thing happened to me with my first TT. Brand new Ball, brand new hitch. My first trip was 300 miles. When I unhitched, both the ball and the hitch were badly galled. I replaced the ball, and lubed ever since with no more galling at all. I used that "special" hitch lube since then. One small can lasted for five with light applications.
