Tolls, Pay by plate (from another forum)

Been following the 'pay by plate' thread elsewhere on forum. Don't see how that would work for someone like me. Living in Michigan, we only have a single plate, a rear plate. No front plate.

I do run Mass Pass (EZ Pass transponders) in all my vehicles but, I cannot figure out if I didn't and traveled a toll road where there where there were no attendants, just caamera's recording plate numbers and then the authority mailing out toll bills, how they would ascertain my plate number and send me a bill, when, I have no front plate on my truck and my rear plate is under the camper on the step bumper, plainly visible from the rear (as required by law) but not visible from overhead (where a camera would be mounted).

Makes no sense to me and even though I asked on that thread, the posters there are trailer / 5er people and cannot fathom my question ot give me an answer.

Couple years back, before I got my Mass Pass', I was forced into the EZ pass lanes on the Illinois tollway and went through the transponders / cameras and I never received a citation or bill. I'm thinking they were unable to record my plate number and send me a bill because, there is no plate to record.

Opinions please??
  • Not sure it's commonplace but around here people run 'prismatic' license plate coverts on their license plates because Toledo is festooned with stoplight cameras and they use handheld speed cams too.

The 'prismatic' plate covers only allow you to see the plate numbers when looking straight on the plate. Looking from the side, the numbers/letters are unreadable, real popular around here.

There was an incident not too long ago where a cop with a handheld speed cam issued 175 speeding tickets for a school zone in 3 hours at 125 bucks each. Turned out that the cop wasn't even in the school zone and was shooting cars that weren't in the 25 zone at all. The Chief of Police had to make a public apology and nullify all the citations and those that paid, got their money back....

    Photo blocker plate cover....

I don't have one but they are available and legal.

the camera is around 1'-2' off the ground, looking forward so after you go through the ezpass it takes a picture of the rear tag.
than they must have some system (or maybe an off shore person) that looks at the picture to figure out the plate number.

I have a truck account so I had one of my Z pass transponders registered for my Dads motorhome. one day he got a letter in the mail that he ran through the system without paying, it include a picture of a JEEP that had a tag that was 1 number different than Dads motorhome. I had to call them and find a human to talk to. after an hour of playing phone games I finally got someone. they looked at the same picture on file, said they were sorry and that was it.

But the picture was a very low angle looking at the rear tag. it was taken somewhere up in NJ.

PS: in PA, ezpass said that if I was towing campers, I needed a commercial account. that required keeping $1K in the ezpass account in reserve. so I went with NJ ezpass which gives me a truck transponder without the $1K requirement.
No idea what the difference is in the transponder but I tried to put a truck one in my jeep and they said no. they sent me a new one, looked exactly the old ones.

Interesting. As many times as I've been through the PA TPK transponders in a big truck, I was only aware of the overhead array, not any at ground level. I used to run out to Reitnauer Trailer by Philly and pick up new trailers for the dealership regularly.

I have the MASS PASS transponders in all our vehicles and they are vehicle specific.

Illinois must just be overhead because I went through a set on the tollway and never heard anything. (prior to my Mass Pass) and that was a couple years ago. My cousin who lives south of Chicago told me the citation for using the EZ Pass lanes on the Illinois Tollway without a transponder was $175 buck fine. Glad I never got it.

On the transponder, it's all inside than counts, don't know how they work but they work with no batteries or anything. Must be similar to the chip in a CC.
  • I have pay by plate. My plate is on the Tc because you can't even see my bumper unless you are on your hands and knees and crawl under the Tc.
  • TN only has rear plates, and the Denver toll system got us. Seems to get you going or coming.
