Of course there is the thief issue to deal as well... My great success is keep my generator out-of-site and never leave it unattended at the camp site when we are not there.
My 2KW Generator is secured in the rear tail gate corner of my covered and lockable truck bed cover. When I need to use it for re-charging my trailer batteries I just pull the generator out onto the dropped tail gate and usually run it starting at 8AM each morning when allowed to run it when camping OFF-GRID. This will be using the on-board converter/charger unit to re-charge my batteries which takes around three hours generator run each morning...
