For dirt bikes I would think you want a long bed. Particularly if you want a tool box across the front of the bed.
For a family of 4 with gear and the tongue weight of a loaded TT you really should be looking at 2500 series trucks. Especially since it will be a dedicated towing/hauling truck. The difference between a 1500 series truck and a 2500 series truck is significant in almost every way. Heavier duty frame, brakes, axles, tires, etc.
I think you'll quickly regret a 1500 truck for family towing duty.
