Depends on the extend of the "bulletproofing". With a less-than-legal EGR delete, yes. If you do a BulletProof diesel oil cooler upgrade, than the parts (with new EGR cooler) runs nearly $2000. Then you add in a turbo rebuild, and head studs and gaskets and you're already over 3-grand. And then you still have potential injector problems, sensors problems, fuel delivery problems, possible HPOP problems.... It say $8k is more like it to truly "bulletproof" that motor. But the good news is... you can buy them for that much less than similar trucks without that motor!

You can bullet proof the 6.0 for a cost of about $2800 with you doing the labor or over $5000 if you have a GOOD shop do the work. Good shop as in a ASE Certified diesel tech. If the truck is in that good of shape and you can put the cash into it, it would be well worth it IMO.

And BTW I'm not a Ford fan by any means. But a clean well maintained truck (ANY TRUCK) would be worth the extra cost.

The 6.0 destroyed a professional relationship that had lasted over 20 years between Ford and IH and cost over a billion dollars in warranty work. Just google around for some of the facts around the 6.0. Follow the money that was spent and that will really speak volumes.

It will eventually have a failure in the EGR cooler, which will cause the oil cooler to fail, which will cause a failure in the fuel injectors, which will ultimately lead to a head gasket failure.. which will cost you new head gaskets and 5k to repair.

Now are you willing to invest 5k either proactively (bulletproofing) the motor or if you are prepared to shell it out at a future date, that is fine. The 6.0 is a strong and well driving motor, but if you choose to drive one of these you must be prepared for this kind of fairly common failure.

A 6.0 original "barn find" like what you have found is not quite like finding an original 1970 Chevelle SS in a barn. A lot of the 6.0's with many many many miles have already had a lot of this work done to them.

Actually the 03-04 had better EGR coolers than 05-07 and were less prone to fail.

why has ford not had recalls then if this was such a horrible common problem?

some are lucky with them I was not head gaskets somewhere around 60k among other things. Mine was a 05 6.0psd

Try to get an Oasis report. If you join or already belong to the Ford Truck Enthusiast forum you can ask to get an Oasis report. That will list work done on the truck if the work was done at a Ford dealer.
