Towing a TT with a Toyota Sequoia or Tacoma?

If you have to stay with a Toyota then I would look at the Tundra vs the Tacoma as the Tocoma is the same as you 4 Runner as others have said. The wheelbase and the weight of your tow vehicle go a long way into safe towing.

Nah, here's the deal Jer.
Look up what a new Sequoia costs and the expected unloaded MPG--13-17 MPG. Now look up what a crew cab truck runs, take your pick from this list--Ford trucks for sale Unloaded, a new F250 will get about the same MPG. Loaded, it will probably do better than a Sequoia but only by a GPM.

The OP is thinking about buying a Sequoia to replace the Forerunner, anticipating pulling a TT. Hence, my comment about $50K vehicles. I think they would be better off keeping the little Forerunner and getting a smallish trailer.

The Tundra will tow more, most likely ride rougher.

The Sequoia will tow less and most likely ride nicer.

There is more to the reduced tow rating of the Sequoia, when compared to the Tundra, than vehicle weight. The suspension is different to make a grocery-getter out of the Sequoia.

True, many parts are the same, but the parts that lead to weight rating are different. It has a coil spring rear suspension versus the leaf spring of the Tundra. Expect a low tongue weight to correspond to the coil springs.

I think the redesign of the Sequoia happened in 2007. Prior to that, the Sequoia may have had the same chassis as the Tundra. Not sure if you are shopping older than 2008, but thought I'd add that. Of course the newer version added more interior room and fold-down seat capability.

If you are looking for comfort when not towing and can stay within the weight ratings, the Sequoia may fit the bill for you.

We went through this in 2008. We are pretty loyal Toyota buyers (400,000 + miles on 3 Toyotas with 1 fuel pump and that's it besides a few recalls)(Knock, Knock). I ended up buying a 3/4 ton Yukon XL, but my trailer at the time weighed a little over 7,000lbs.

2007+ Sequoia with 5.7L and towing package (4.30 gearing) should handle most 6k dry TTs as long as you do not load up the SUV while towing, like a family of 6 weighing 800 pounds.

Sequoia owner here....have used it to tow our 28' TT since May of 2009. Loaded and ready for the road the trailer weighs 6,000 lbs. and the Sequoia handles it with ease, so I'm a bit mystified about the reply to your post saying you should have a TT weight of no more than 4,500 lbs. Maybe with the smaller engine, yes, but the 5.7 L has plenty of power; it not only delivers better overall performance than our old TV (5.9 L Dodge gas engine) we get better gas mileage as well.

Weight distribution - wouldn't tow without it. Cost? I didn't pay anything NEAR $50,000 for it, new off the lot. They aren't too common on used car lots. Is payload a concern? Yes, and that is the "Achilles heel" for this platform but most of its service is as DW's daily driver. I've weighed our truck so I know an actual weight, and I use a scale to verify my tongue weight before we hit the road in order to ALWAYS stay within specs.

We have been towing for four years with a Tacoma Off-Road model -- it is great. Our trailer is small and light. We go absolutely everywhere -- steep mountains, hot deserts, ice and snow, thousands of miles.

We did have a problem with the rear leaf springs -- a known issue. Toyota fixed it. Otherwise, no problems. Check out our trip blog in my signature, below, if you are interested in the kinds of places the Tacoma has taken us.

I should add that although we get 10 mpg while towing, I often get over 20 mpg on the LA freeway system with careful driving techniques.

Given the choice I would go for the sequoia as its the tundra chaises and engine.You can get it with the 4.7 or 5.7 so depends on the load you will be okay.

I use a Tundra Crew Max. take a peek, it only has a 5.5 bed and is a people mover. that will actually work better as you can carry bikes and grill etc rather easily due to the bed.

I tow a 6300 Dry and 7000 Lbs read to go camper with mine. I just use the bed for bikes and a grill. Its usually empty . I am near payload but its a truck and I do not think going 80-90% payload is going to kill it.

Got mine used with 80k for 24k. It is a limited crewcab . now at 115k its is still has a lot of life.

my gas guzzling highlander 25.5-28.5 mpg was not nearly that much.
