Towing behind a larger camper hitch question

Thank you for all the responses, exactly what I was looking for.

You're talking a very low tongue weight, only a small trailer hauling a motorcycle. The Torklift hitch and Supertruss is a very good and strong hitch extension system, but not likely needed for this application. It is certainly recommended and very well worth the money, if you intend to go heavier in the future.

I would use a Reese or Curt single tube extension in the stock hitch, if the stock hitch is a 2-1/2" class 4 or 5. If it's a class 3, you may want to upgrade it. Stock class 3's often have alot of flex when used with a long extension bar.

If upgrading the hitch, the Curt Magnum and Reese Titan are very good single receiver hitches for use with extension bars and light to moderate tongue weights.

The Torklift hitch and Supertruss are the ultimate solution for heavy towing when a long extension length is needed.

I have a 42" over hang and tow a jet ski trailer without any problems using my factory receiver and 2 each 18" extensions joined together. That makes 36" and along with the receiver ball mount, which is another 8" long, it's enough to clear the end of the camper fine. My tongue weight is around 40 pounds with this trailer.

I do have a Superhitch and Supertruss, but I don't use them for towing my jet ski trailer or my motorcycle trailer. I do use it to flat tow my Suzuki Samurai and larger trailers though.

Whatever. Just jam an old tent pole in your truck's receiver. It'll be just fine.

Everybody wants Torklift strength and peace of mind but nobody ever wants to pay for it.

I guess it depends on the hitch that you have now. I use a 2 1/2 x 18 inch extension with my stock Ford hitch.

On the other hand, consider the attachment for the rear tiedowns. My tiedowns extend below the hitch. It hasn't been a problem for the past 2 years, but it seems low. The advantage of the Torklift hitch is the mount for the rear tiedowns is more integrated.

The Reese Titan extension has a tongue weight capacity of 450# at 42", so I would go that route. No reason to spend four or five times the amount on the TorkLift if you're not exceeding that tongue weight.
