I've had just about every diesel for a work truck, except the Ford 6.7L and the latest gen Duramax.
None of them have convinced me to give up my V10. All of the diesels gave me more problems than my V10. None of them towed faster (bear in mind 4500s and up are detuned to ~300 HP, a light duty diesel would have pulled better). The V10 does have to spin faster to make peak power, but besides steep mountain grades, it stays at a low RPM. The spinning doesn't bother me. It's smooth enough even at nearly 5,000 RPM.
Our other cars have EcoBoosts (1.0, 2.0, 3.5L). The 3.5L would convince me to give up the V10 if they offered it in heavier configurations than they do now. High potential repair costs of diesel keep me away, since I keep my stuff a long time. For somebody who doesn't keep their truck past 100,000 miles, potential repair costs probably aren't much to worry about, and the power they make now is pretty appealing!
