Went from diesel to gas (ford 6.2) towing 8k tt; and I regret it. Don't mind the high rpms, but very slow uphill climbs, about 8 mpg overall, and no engine brake.
Can't imagine what it would be like towing anything heavier.
Go with the diesel; just take good care of it.
I guess what diesel you had before the gasser makes the difference.
I went from and early 99 PSD to a 12 6.2 with the 4.30 diffy. I will never look back. I have pulled the Saluda grade going north on I 26 eons of times. My fifth wheel weighs 10K plus or minus a few. The 6.2 pulls that grade just as easy or it seems better than the old 7.3 did and I usually run around 3500 R's.
Possibly you are disgruntled with the 6.2 for whatever reason. I think you should hurry on down and trade it in on a rattler. :W
Disappointed is the key word; after reading various threads about how great people's gassers tow even more weight than I tow, I figured I would be fine. I didn't expect it to tow like my 6.7 diesel did, but I did expect a little better performance than I am getting. To its credit, it tows nicely on a flat highway with no headwind, but hit a hill and I slow down to a crawl, and going down, well, I really miss the engine brake. But I am a seasonal traveler, so I don't tow often enough for it to really matter.
And I have several times now considered going back to a "rattler". :)
