It is generally true that a diesel will last longer than a gas engine, but keep in mind, that the pickup it resides in is the same. Same frame, same body, etc. Unless one is doing something like hot shotting or transporting TT's from factory to dealers, they are not going to really rack up the miles to get full potential life out of a diesel. The normal user is going to have body or frame issues with a diesel just as fast as with a gasser and in the same general time frame. As with real estate, it is about location, location, location. In the Rust Belt, for the average user, a diesel will offer nothing really in terms of longevity. In better climates, one could see some substantive long term use. But then, most folks will trade or sell before they ever get all they can out of diesel pickup.
The main question really is... what work is needing to be done? A diesel will do better under some circumstances, but the gasser may do just as well in other situations and end up being the better value. There is nothing truly special about either one. Just look for what will get the job done you are needing and will offer the best bang for your dollar.
