"Big diesels are expected to last longer and people will pay for it."
I am in my mid 50's and have never worn out any engine in a vehicle and the life expectancy of gas engines seems to be over 300,000 miles now. Diesels used to last longer simply because they were designed to, for the most part. GM proved decisively that diesels can be designed to have a short life with their late 70s Olds 350 diesel. There are reasons to buy a diesel but in my experience life is not one of them. And I do keep my vehicles a long time. I have a 34 year old pickup that the body is falling apart on but the engines is still quite sound.
