Duty cycle has a big impact on longevity.The gas engines in are work truck typically last 175K miles or so. Keep in mind these engines are run hard their entire lives. On the other hand the diesels are last into the 300K range.
A truck that is used lightly with outlast a truck that is run hard.
By hard I don't mean abused I mean carry a heavy load in all kinds of conditions all the time.
Rumor has it Ford has avoided putting the very popular/successful Eco boost engines into 3/4 ton any heavier duty trucks because of potential duty cycle issues
