Towing mirrors....

Recently I changed out my little stick on fish-eye cheapy
tow mirrors...the ones I replaced the originals with make the
cars in the parallel lanes appear "farther away then they
really are"...obviously, not a desireable effect.

Any recommendations as to what to purchase to improve the view ?
Or, is this just part of getting old ? I have those powered extendable
early 2000's GM mirrors as the base.

I guess the real question is, what have you folks done to get
safer views...those wrap ons (tried before) have too much vibration.

What works ?

  • Check your local wrecking yards or eBay. While not cheap or new, they may be what you are looking for. I'm very happy that Ram improved their mirrors because I was long spoiled with the Ford mirrors before the others started improving...
  • That is an interesting thought Bedlam... only thing is , I
probably have to sell a kidney to be able to afford them...

  • Wireless rear view camera works for me. I can see things that would be impossible to see with mirrors.
  • Will the newer GM mirrors fit your older truck? All the OEM mirrors are getting better with each refresh. The Ram mirrors on my 2015 are much better than my buddy's 2007.
  • Thanks Russ..I hope that's the case... my last set was just so
"comfortable" that these are disappointing. I'll give it some
time...just had a recent right side incident where the driver
sped up and stayed along side my 5ver even after the turn signal
had been on well in advance of my intended lane change...
I thought they were still way back and the fish eye distorted the distance.

...good thing I drive like a nun.

I'll give these lenses some time yet... as you indicate, driver error.

Dennis, I wonder how those McKesh would work with my powered extendable GM mirrors ?

You get use to them! You will adjust to understand were the the cars in in the next lane over.
My flip up tow mirrors have a large flat mirror and a built in convex spot mirror.
I have driven "Mirror Required" vehicles for 40+ years, and adjust quickly to any change in mirror type on the right side.
