towing near max weight. advice?

I know everyone is just looking our for the safety aspect. I would really like to upgrade my truck now also, but that will have to wait a couple years. Unfortunately, we have looked at over 2 dozen TTs in the last 6 months and there are only 3 we can both afford and would want to own. All 3 are within 150lbs of each other. I did verify the dealers were not trying to low ball me with the "dry" weight as stock. All the weights I have received as with all options. But again, I don't think the problem is the tow capacity but rather the payload.

I am seriously considering putting some money into suspension upgrades. If I could make my rear end similar to a 3/4 ton then I may feel better. Although the sticker would not change, there are HD shocks and springs I could add to help things. I am so torn.
