Towing PUP with Rav4

Anyone tow with a Rav4 or similar?
A friend wants to buy a 2200lb PUP and tow with a 2008 Rav4 AWD V6, 300lb hitch and 3500lb tow capability.
She says it has a transmission cooler but no hitch at the moment.

I'm skeptical on telling her yay or nay. The numbers seem to work but I don't know how this would handle on the road. I did tell her that if she did do it to pack light.

Any feedback?
Thanks

  • I used to pull a 2000# pup with a dodge magnum 3.5 and it went well. Power was good. Stability was good. Brakes on the pup would have been nice though.
  • I towed an Aliner with a V6 Rav4 with no problems - about the same weight. I would definitely recommend trailer brakes/brake controller! Many states have laws that require trailer brakes for trailers over 2000 lb. Ours was around 2000 lb. Better safe than sorry!

We upgraded our tow vehicle to a Nissan Pathfinder only for our comfort and ability to carry more "stuff", as well as having more room for our 3 dogs.

    2010 rav4 sport V6 and a 2007 10' flagstaff 208. weighs around 2500 ready to camp...
Do you have trailer brakes on your Flagstaff?

No, no need for them. Been all over the steepest hills in NH. not an issue at all....4 wheel discs on the rav4 stop you up real quick. But most trailers have brakes...mine doesn't and I bought it because of that.

  • It will work fine if connected optimally.

Note... It has a 3.5L v6. The same size engine that is in your Eco Boost pick up.
  • How long is the trailer- we have a rav4- I have the hitch on for bikes- the wheel base in the rav is pretty short- so you definitely would not want a long trailer.
  • Have a friend who tows 1500# here in the west with a Prius and has NO problems, so I see no reason a RAV4 wouldn't be up to the task. You can get a hitch for it from several sources, including eTrailer . Just make sure the trailer has brakes so there will be no problem getting it stopped in a panic stop.

The rav doesn't even know it is back there. And I REALLY mean that...zero sway, super stable. I have to use cruise because it has no problem climbing over 70 on the highway before you notice it. I set cruise at 65.

If it weighed over 3000lbs it still wouldn't bother it...he will have a great combo...fuel sucks but who cares..I certainly don't anyway...life.

One thing that they should make sure of since they do not have a hitch yet is GET the factory toyota hitch. After market hitches attach at 4 points, the factory hitch has 16 attachment points...it costs more but who cares...DO IT.

and I don't pack light. Wife and 2 kids...3 bikes on the roof of the rav, canoe on the trailer, firewood and mini fridge in back of rav and trailer jammed.

It is a Superb TV for a popup

and we take it yearly through the white mountains of NH...works flawlessly
