Yes I'm on FTE and posted up over there to somewhat mixed answers.
What I'm really after is off the line, stump pulling grunt to get the trailer moving, and that's not what the 6.2 is best at. It's got the torque but its up high in the 4500rpm range. It's no 6.8 v10 and no diesel. Once underway, the 6 speed manages the power well and there are no huge gaps between gears.
But, aside from the 3 times a year I'm towing, it's great. It's certainly not bad enough to warrant trading it in and laying out $15-20k cash to get into a new diesel.
I will continue to look for a guinea pig 6.2 / 4:30 to test pull the rig with.
Keep the comments coming, and thanks to all.
Ben,
Yes it will improve off the line grunt since it will allow the engine to get to a higher rpm quicker, but to what extent I can't say. Once the vehicle increases speed there will be a diminishing effect with the 6 speed tranny.
Good luck...
