3) What I really wish I had was a low mileage 08/09/10 Super Duty with a V10, instead of the higher revving 6.2L motor........much more low-end torque to get the trailer rolling, without all the repair costs of the diesels.
I had a 2006 V10, 30V with a 5 spd. It had the 4.30 RAR. I towed a 12,500 fiver with it. And also used it on my current 14,000 GVWR 5'r. It really pulled both equally well. The extra 1,500 pounds made no difference to that truck. It did need to rev on long 6%+ grades. RPM's of 4,000 or more were needed. And as low as 3rd gear to keep at 55 MPH on those grades. Went across country twice with that truck and 12,000# trailer. Sold the truck with 50,000 miles. Normal towing mileage was 7 MPG. Normal MPG ranged from 5.3 to 9.7. Depending on terrain and head/tail wind. Once I got 11.7 MPG down hill all day long, eastbound I 10. Tailwind 40 MPH downhill all day.
Truck towed great...for what it was. But at 7 MPG and a small 26 gallon tank it wouldn't pass a gas station. Fuel range was 170 miles per tank, towing. I would never add an auxillary tank for gasoline. And as a DD the MPG was 10 around town and 13 MPG Highway. If gas mileage and frequent fillups does not bother you, the V10 with 4.30 RAR may be what you want. But you'll still find yourself winding it out on hills. Or else you can always slow down on the hills, and rev slower. And get there a couple of minutes later.
