Just to clarify some things here...
1) No, I don't have a burning desire to re-gear the current truck........I'd rather not do it at all, I am just looking for the best solution to get additional towing power where I need it most.
So you stated you loved the current truck, thought that made re-gearing an option to keep the current truck
2) I'm not sure that re-gearing my current truck will make that much difference, either.......off the line, it will undoubtably help (the $2500 question is, how MUCH). At highway speed, I anticipate it will help only marginally with the 6 speed auto I've got.
With the 6 speed auto, I doubt the change would make all that much difference, the transmission, using Tow/Haul will make that up
3) What I really wish I had was a low mileage 08/09/10 Super Duty with a V10, instead of the higher revving 6.2L motor........much more low-end torque to get the trailer rolling, without all the repair costs of the diesels. I really don't drive it enough to care about the MPG. I've looked online, and found some nice looking V10s with lower mileage, that would be an option to trade my truck for one, but it seems like a definite step backwards going from an '11 with Backup Cam, SYNC, LED Trip computer, etc etc into an 08-10 body truck (just being honest here).
I think what you have done is gone from a lighter TT to a TT several thousand pounds heaver, while earlier going from a diesel to gas. I see that to get what you want when towing you only have two options.
1. Go find a slightly older V10, with as many as the options you want, then add what ever it doesn't have to be comfortable.
2. Go back to a diesel, Ram, GM, or Ford the newest seem to be overcoming the EPA/Smog issues. Then you will have back the towing experience of the past. That is not a gas vs. Diesel statement, they just don't tow the same. The 6.2 and the V10 will both do the job, they will just need to rev higher to do it.
...Appreciate you all taking the time to post up your thoughts.
