So, here's the plan.
Not going to regear the existing truck.
Once I have my hitch set up and ready, I will try to get some weight in the trailer to mimic how we would be loaded for a vacation, I'll pile the family in and we'll take a 50 mile tow......see how the hitch is set up and see how the truck pulls it (considering I'm not thrilled with how it tows 9400#, I'm pretty sure it will struggle worse with an additional 2500# to move.....
If it's live-able for the 2-3 trips we make a year (mostly Michigan right now, but in a few years we'd like to do Pennsylvania, Smokey Mountains, etc), we'll keep it.
If it's just something that we can't live with, I will wait until April or May and order myself a new Crew Cab Diesel of some sort......I'll spec it out exactly how I want it, and when it arrives mid-summer next year, I'll be in a better position to trade the current truck in and finance things so that my total monthly payments stay the same as they are now (ie, I'll have paid off another car by that point). Plus I should be able to qualify for some end of year rebates at that time. I think this is probably what will end up happening......
Thanks to all for your suggestions.
Now you may have got yourself in trouble here..
You are just being way to "logical" for the forum to accept..:W
seriously...you are doing exactly the right thing
