- TOOBOLDExplorerWhich F250 gasser do you have, 5.4L, 6.2L,6.8L along with the gear ratio of your truck?
- Buck50HDExplorerThe Ford trans 1st and 2nd gear with 3.73 rear is better overall ratios than a Ram 4.10. If you have 4.30's, big advantage. I'm happy pulling 11k with my 6.2 3.73. It's 385HP, just needs more gear to get there, compared to a diesel.
In the end, I think it all hinges on what you think is acceptable and the ratings of the truck. And you probably won't know until you tow it. - fireman41ExplorerI don't know what 12000 lbs would be like . But I pull a 7000 lbs TT with 3.73 and I came up over fancy gap (I77 north out of NC) 65 mph no problem
- wintersunExplorer IIWith the gas engine I would keep the 5th wheel trailer with its rated load to less than 9,000 lbs. of weight. And as was already mentioned I would want 4.10 or lower gears and have them changed on the truck if you have 3.73 or 3.55.
With a gas engine the same truck with 4.10 gears has a 25% greater tow rating than the truck with 3.73 gears, and 3.73 equipped trucks are rated 25% higher than one with 3.55 gears.
What should be considered in terms of comfort and safety is how much distance your vehicle with its trailer will need to get up to 55 MPH and be able to merge with traffic on the highway. This is where the lower gears make a very big difference.
For towing the lower gears will often result in better fuel economy as the engine is pulling the load while at its optimum RPM range. - HannibalExplorerIf your travel plans don't include the Rockies, you should be fine power wise but it will rev on the up hills. We tow 8500~lbs around the southeast with our 5.4L/auto/3.73 F250 with no complaints. Others cringe and get a migraine at the sound of a gas V8 running in it's harmless normal rpm operating range. If you're one of those, you'll hate it.

thinking of buying a solitude 320x 5th wheel, only have a ford f250 gas, 2015 pu, willthis do the job?
If you have 4:30 gears, yes. With 3:73s you will be pretty close or over Ford's tow rating of around 12.5K for 3:73 gears. I tow around 10K with 3:73s. Wouldn't want to go heavier unless I did a gear swap.
Pin weight will be something to consider as well. Check your available payload/capacity tire label on your driver's door post.
S - 8ironExplorerOnly if you have the 4.30 rear gears...and it won't be fun. Just traded off a 6.2 off because I didn't enjoy the revving, gear hunting, or terrible MPG when towing (or even when empty).

It will no doubt pull it to your destination. You may very well be over on your GVWR but under on your rear axle rating if you care about such numbers.
It will rev up to 4-5000 rpm on the hills and may lose a little speed but should maintain a decent speed. Can you tolerate high rpm from time to time or does it make you feel like you are hurting the truck (it doesn't actually hurt it).
As far as stability there are lots and lots of 5ers being towed by 3/4 ton HD trucks and people are satisfied. Would a dually be better? Probably but you already have this truck.
Would I do it if I had the truck and that is the trailer I wanted. Yeah I would.
x2 with 4.30's only. - ib516Explorer II320x
35' long
15,000# GVWR
11,500# dry
Hope you have 4.30 rear axle. If you have the 3.73 - no way. If you have the 4.30, it might pull it "ok", but you will have to weigh everything to ensure you don't exceed the truck specs.
I have a more powerful Hemi gasser and a 5er that's longer but lighter, and mine does good. I have 4.10 axles. - rhagfoExplorer IIIWell Loaded that 11,500# dry 5er will likely weigh 12,500# to 13,000# loaded.
Not what i would want to pull with a gasser, just me!
