When I was looking at Four Wheel campers they would only put one on a 2nd (or 3rd) generation Tacoma. That's 2005 or later.
The V6 actually doesn't get good mileage under load. Not particular good empty for that matter. I read on Expedition Portal how someone was running the 2.7 4 cyl with a FWC and getting close to 20 mpg. I'd check into that.
