Buzz,
Thanks for the ride in the one horse open sleigh. Lassen is a special place that we've only been to in the other 3 seasons, and you have the perfect rig and disposition for it. This much snow only fuels your wanderlust. I like your flexible, 'make do' attitude about trip prep. There was special and focused attention paid to snow gear. I like that.
Thanks again,
jefe
THanks
I've been an outdoorsman since I was in my early teens and was backpacking, scuba diving and day hiking the Santa Monica Mountains.
I read Colin Fletchers "the Compleat Walker'. Freedom of the hills, and so forth. I learned to rock climb and do mountaineering. All of these things could kill you if you did not study the environment and have the proper equipment and know how to use it.
Later when I became a firefighter I was able to see in living color the results of screwing up while working numerous vehicle crashes, back country rescues, dealing with medical emergencies.
I take going off the beaten path with total seriousness and plan for self rescue only.
As a fortune cookie once said to me "Caution is the eldest child of wisdom, something must to do" Analyze every situation and change your plan to fit the conditions.
And always remember that famous movie line from Dirty Harry " A man has got to know his limitations"
